This blog talks about suicide. Please don’t read it if you find the topic difficult.
“Interesting times” here refers to a time of change and upheaval. Which sits well with me at the moment. I’ve just been diagnosed with Multiple System Atrophy. A variant of Parkinsons disease which means that I have, on average, another five to ten years of life left in my account. Always assuming that Death doesn’t have me earmarked for some other departure. I’ve already survived heart problems and bowel cancer, so I suppose I shouldn’t complain. The difficulty is that I don’t particularly want to die. I want my life to carry on along the same trajectory as it is currently. With one proviso. I mustn’t die alone. My mother predeceased my father by a couple of years. He ghosted his way through each long and empty day for about a year until he caught an infection which should have been shaken off with antibiotics, but it killed him. To his and our gratitude. (My abiding memory is of him sitting alone in his room watching a football match with no pleasure or joy. So out of character.).
My wife and I must die simultaneously – and painlessly! With that caveat I will go to my ending quietly. Other than that I don’t much mind when or where I die. Or how. A lethal injection would be my preferred way. We happily do it to our pets. Why not ourselves? There will be no merit if I end up blocking a hospital bed just to keep me alive when I don’t want to be kept alive.
It’s remarkably difficult to find information on killing myself painlessly and effectively. The click of a mouse will give me 50 kinds of pornography but almost nothing on suicide. How topsy-turvy is that? (Whist I’m here, if anybody knows of resources for a successful suicide, please contact me. I won’t tell anybody you called but you will have my thanks and appreciation.)
I’m not impressed by parliament blocking the Assisted Dying Bill. I had hopes for that making my future easier. Now it’s a trip to Switzerland, where they seem more enlightened. (Does anyone have the number for the Dignitas clinic? I’d like to make a reservation.)
And if anyone has any information about assisted dying, please forward it. It’ll be gratefully received.
