The sea is both mother and father.
Life and death.
Moving to its own tides and rhythms.
We learn to revere it and to fear it.
We exploit its bounty. Yet abuse it.
We love it and dread it.
It is both Rân and Neptune.
It drowns and saves. With indifference.
It covers much of the earth’s surface.
Most of which is unknown to us.
We know it as that oceanic feeling.
Being one with everything.
It’s a feeling I so rarely have. Being connected.
A part of everything.
Mostly I feel like a lonely piece of rock.
Marooned in an indifferent sea.
Offering sanctuary to a stray piece
Of flotsam or jetsam
Until they’re washed away
To another shore and another time.
Or perhaps a message in a bottle.
With my story inside.
Waiting for you to pick me up
And take me home. At last.
Home where I can rest. At peace. Finally.
Free from the endless ebb and flow of life
Restless Neptune’s perpetual demands.
Free to be a still, deep lagoon.
Where you may bathe
Safe and secure.
